Kornati - here you will experience Robinson holiday

Lavdara & Kornati Impression

Kornati - one of the national parks of Croatia since 1980s are the islands of Kornati. They are located in northern Dalmatia. They are easily accessible from Zadar and Šibenik. This archipelago consists of 89 islands of different size on an area of 217 km2. The islands are mostly uninhabited. The largest are the islands of Kornat, Zut, Piskera, Levrnak, Lavsa, Sita, which are larger than 1 km2. The remaining islands are less than 1 ha.

If you are interested in in NP Kornati, have any questions or you want to share your experience, you can find us also here.

We found a trip to these islands by chance during a walk in the center of Zadar. Right next to the bridge that connects the city with the city center you will find a number of stalls offering excursions. They all attract tourists by amazing photos. Side by side about 5 stalls in each the same for the same price. We did not understand the logic of why they are all side by side when they are 5 different companies, ie they are competing with each other. To ask "zašto?"1 makes no sense.

We came to Kornati thanks to a young man who sold tours on the other side of the center in a single stand. We were attracted to him by Hungarian language. The languages spoken by the staff were posted on the stall.

To hear Croatian speaking Hungarian is like a Finnish speaking Japanese. Until then, I thought there was no Croatian who had learnt Hungarian for passion, so I approached him with disbelief and asked "Govorite li madjarski?"2. The answer was 'Perszehogy, magyarul beszelek'3which made it clear that he was not a devotee of Hungarian culture, but he could learn anything from tourists. "Jeste li iz Madjarske? .... Nevjerojatno, da Hrvat priča madjarski"4 I asked with an open mouth.

Ante then gave us a breathtaking interpretation of the national park. The trip would be a very pleasant variegation holiday, because without the car we could not take other trips. After he showed us in a booklet in the crystal clear sea some scantily clad lady and after his statement "Kornati óóóóóóóó-szép horvát sziréna óóóóóó"5, which immediately cheered us up, we assessed that we will go there ... not because of siren, but because of Croatian Hungarian.

Swimming and disembarkation is not possible everywhere

Thanks to Ante we had a smile on our lips even in the evening. The next morning we were excitedly awaiting the arrival of the ship Leut, with which we had to take this trip.

A small notice to those who go to the national park on their own - you need to pay an entrance fee and be trained on the cruise route. Many people of different nationalities gathered at the pier. We were subconsciously pushing for the Croats. We settled on the upper deck to see what awaited us and set out for the sea. The sun was still rising in the sky, the city awakening, the sea was still. First we saw the bottom, because the sun's rays beautifully lit the sea water. As the meters progressed, the turquoise became dark blue and we could not see the fish anymore. Already the sun's rays shone only on the surface.

Zadar moved away and we were approaching the island of Ugljan, known for its olive oil production. It is an island located directly opposite the city and can be seen from the Sea Organ. On the left side there was a small island called Ošljak, the locals call it Lazareth, because there was a hospital during the plague.

Immediately after boarding, they offered us local alcohol and sweets and we were accompanied by 3 guides who spoke about 10 languages together, which was very nice to me. So we had a rich interpretation and a lot of new information. We passed under the bridge that connects the island of Ugljan with the island of Pasman, around the island of Lavdara until we arrived in the national park. The journey here took about 2 hours.

NP Kornati is arid archipelago. The islands mostly are covered by stones and a few trees. Some also feature human homes. There is no water or electricity. Croats do not want tourism to destroy this jewel. There is a paradise for divers and biologists around. You will also find the ruins of the first ancient fish tank, the remains of a Roman villa, the lighthouse. There is something to enjoy. The direct unearthly creations of nature amaze from every side. With your eyes you try to capture all that beauty, you keep running around the deck so you don't miss anything. Here you can see with your own eyes what the sea can do - the purity of sea water, which over the millennia has given a new look to the surrounding islands and rocks.

On one side Kornati washes the open sea. Sometimes you can see dolphins. The pearl is the island of Tanjurić, flat as a saucer, where a concert is organized every year. Musicians land on it, spectators dock around the perimeter of the island and listen to the tones of the national park. Once a year the music gives the whole park a unique atmosphere.

Part of our trip was also swimming. We did not bath directly in the national park. Our ship stopped on the island of Lavdara, which is adjacent to it. Lavdara is a small island with one dwelling and pier. It is covered with olives, scrub and a little grass. You can cross the islet in about 10 minutes. It is even possible to stay here and experience the so-called "odmor a la Robinson"6. It must to be very nice.

According to the owner's website you can rent an apartment that is equipped with both water and electricity and you will also get a boat if you have a captain's exam. An ideal place for people who want to get out of civilization, in the soul are “mali mornari”7 and get along with fish and vegetables from the garden. The perfect Mediterranean harmony of man and nature. We have not become Robinsons, but we have bathed ourselves and enjoyed unprecedented beauty. A hearty lunch awaited us on the ship.

Bathing on Lavdara

Our heart broke as our Leut blew all his passengers back aboard. It was a sin to leave that virgin beauty and peace. We wanted to start pouting on the beach like little kids that we don't want to go home. In such a place, the trophies of modern times seem to be irrelevant to you, because you realize that a perfect feeling of happiness is a piece of the sea, something in your mouth and a place where you can lower your head. We didn't mind that it was really hot outside.

All our senses were captivated by this islet and it was the perfect spot for the whole trip. If you have the soul of Robinson, Lavdara is the right place for you. Enjoy solitude, peace, privacy and relaxation here. If you are not Robinson, be sure to visit at least Kornati, which is not in vain is a national park and really are worthy of this name.
